Lemongrass
(India) Cymbopogon citratus

Plant: grass
Source:  A yellow to reddish-amber oil steam-distilled from the blades of the tropical grass.
Odor:  A penetrating grassy-herbal, lemony aroma like that of Citronella but less intense.
Properties:  rubefacient, nervine, tonic, sedative, balancing
Common Uses:  fragrance, massage, spritzers, diffusor, lotions.   Lemongrass is used as a deodorant, insect repellent, treats athlete’s foot, excessive perspiration, muscle pain, digestive complaints, headache, stress
skin care: antiseptic, acne.  (caution: skin sensitizer)

There are several varieties of Lemongrass meeting the high demand for this oil’s numerous uses in fragrances, soaps, and other commercial products.  Its astringent, purifying, tonic properties are helpful in treating various skin problems and varicosity.  Likewise topically, Lemongrass combats foot and body odors and excessive perspiration.  Like Citronella, Lemongrass is an effective insect repellent, particularly against ants, fleas, ticks, and lice, and an aerosol disinfectant that can be dispersed in spritzers or diffusor blends.

Its analgesic and mood enhancing characteristics lend themselves to massage therapy to aid muscle tone, help relieve physical pain from sports or exercise, reduce mental stress, and soothe nervous conditions.  To avoid any likelihood of dermal or mucous membrane sensitization or irritation, as with other citrus/citral oils, some caution is necessary when topically applying Lemongrass oil.
